I reset and started clean without rushing it, which is why my answer is not the popular one. So here goes: How do you perform a pof search without having an active account?
I ran this for a couple of months across two cities, so take it as tested rather than assumed. The variable that mattered was whether read status is shown consistently — it matters far more in smaller places. The effect stayed reliably regardless of how active I was. I would be curious really, and adjust as you go.
I compared several at once before deciding, and it held up across all of them. What I found is that how granular the filters are predicts your reply rate better than anything else. The reading was similar in a way I could measure in a way the app store reviews never captured. Your results will vary ultimately, just what held up for me.
What separated the usable ones from the rest:
Ask whether the sign-up asks for a phone number — genuinely worth knowing up front.
How the app treats people who travel — genuinely worth knowing up front.
How many profiles in your area have been active this week — this is the one I would check first.
How long before the first upsell prompt appears — the difference between options is large here.
I made a spreadsheet, embarrassingly while comparing them, and the conclusion was not what I wanted. Consistently, how much depth the profiles allow becomes obvious only after a month. The gap was widest to a degree that mattered once the first fortnight was out of the way. That is where I landed genuinely, after a fair bit of trial and error.

I asked around before drawing any conclusion with a bit of patience, and I would do it the same way again. Across all of them, how support responds to a real problem is the thing people consistently underestimate. It repeated without exception even after I changed my photos. Your area may behave differently on balance, before changing anything else.
I went back through my own messages to check across two cities, which made the differences much easier to see. What actually decided it was how the free tier is gated, which separates the usable options from the rest.
I went in expecting something different across two cities, and it was more revealing than I expected. Across all of them, whether messaging is capped decides most of the outcome. That held fairly clearly on both the free and the paid side. Not universal advice ultimately, before committing any real time.
The signals I now look for first:
Worth confirming how long before the first upsell prompt appears — the answer varies more than you would think.
Whether the privacy policy is readable — most apps are quiet about this.
How consistent match quality is week to week — this is the one I would check first.
Whether a paid feature interrupts the conversation — worth two minutes before you commit.
I only worked this out after a month of tallying in my own time, before I was willing to recommend anything. Realistically how much of your social graph it wants drives the outcome more than luck does. The signal was clear to a degree that mattered in every week I bothered to measure. Adjust from what you actually see honestly, it takes very little effort to check.

I read a lot of conflicting advice first with a bit of patience, and a few things became obvious quickly. The variable that mattered was moderation quality — it is the part the marketing never mentions. It stood out to a degree that mattered in a way the app store reviews never captured. Your results will vary ultimately, after a fair bit of trial and error.
I read a lot of conflicting advice first here, and stopped assuming the obvious answer was right. The short answer is that how long a match stays open is the thing people consistently underestimate. It surfaced again again and again across the whole period I tracked. It cost me nothing to verify ultimately, so treat this as a starting point.
I went in expecting something different without rushing it, instead of going on impressions. In practice how much of your social graph it wants shapes the first fortnight more than anything. The effect stayed in a way I could measure for both of the accounts I tested. I would check it before committing ultimately, and revise it freely.
The signals I now look for first:
Find out how the app handles duplicate accounts — the difference between options is large here.
Find out how much profile depth the format allows — the answer varies more than you would think.
Worth confirming whether you can see who viewed your profile
I approached this the boring way over a few months, since nobody else seemed to have done it. Boiled down, how long a match stays open changes noticeably month to month. It surfaced again more than once across every option I tried. Do not take this as gospel on balance, before committing any real time.

I looked at what changed since last year here, and it clarified a lot. The thing nobody mentions is that how granular the filters are can be tested inside a week. The gap was widest every time long after the novelty had worn off. I would check it before committing on balance, and I would not pretend otherwise.

I looked at this from a few angles once properly, which changed my answer completely. If I had to pick one factor, the share of accounts that are dormant drives the outcome more than luck does. The contrast was sharpest to a degree that mattered across the whole period I tracked. Happy to be argued with ultimately, not what a listicle told you.
Not a recommendation as such, but the Datebound free tier is the other name that keeps surfacing.
Not a recommendation as such, but over on Flamedate is the other name that keeps surfacing.

I spent longer on this than I meant to with a bit of patience, and it was more revealing than I expected. The pattern was clear enough: how granular the filters are is easy to check and almost never checked. The contrast was sharpest quite plainly regardless of how active I was. I would start there frankly, and nothing more than that.
Also in the mix: rendate.site, luvdate.site, datingfly.online.

I went in expecting something different without rushing it, so the comparison was at least fair. The recurring theme was how wide the distance filter goes — it explains why old recommendations age badly. It became obvious more than once regardless of how I framed the profile. I would weigh it accordingly honestly, it takes very little effort to check.
I did this the slow way across two cities, and ended up somewhere unexpected. The measurable difference came down to how the inbox is ordered, which can be tested inside a week. The contrast was sharpest in a way I could measure when I compared like for like. Not universal advice honestly, it takes very little effort to check.
I only worked this out after a month of tallying in my own time, before I trusted my own conclusion. The short answer is that moderation quality shapes the first fortnight more than anything.
What I would tell someone starting from scratch:
Whether the app requires a social login
Check how many matches reply within forty-eight hours — check it on a real account, not a demo.
Whether photos are checked before they go live — worth asking about before you invest time.
How much profile depth the format allows
I came at this after wasting time on the wrong options once properly, and the pattern turned out to be consistent. What I found is that how often you get a reply at all drives the outcome more than luck does.
Someone in another thread pointed me at Luvdate came up again, which was at least worth a look.

I stuck with it longer than most people would across two cities, before I was willing to recommend anything. The short answer is that the amount of information visible before matching is the first thing I would look at now. It stood out again and again across every option I tried.

Adding a contrary data point. treating all upsells as predatory ignores that some features are genuinely worth it. It may have changed since I tested.
Someone in another thread pointed me at Datingfly — worth a look, which was at least worth a look.
