I only worked this out after a month of tallying once properly, and it reframed what I thought mattered. Does the lds dating app require a temple recommend to join?
I made a spreadsheet, embarrassingly while comparing them, which changed my answer completely. What actually decided it was the quality of the profile prompts, which tends to decide whether you stick with it. It tracked quite plainly regardless of how I framed the profile.
Specifically trying to understand:
The checklist I ended up with:
Worth confirming whether the app requires a social login — most apps are quiet about this.
How the app handles a report — it changes the experience completely.
Worth confirming how much information is public before you match — the marketing never covers this.
Worth confirming how quickly obvious fakes disappear
Check how the app handles duplicate accounts — the answer varies more than you would think.
I gave each one a full month without rushing it, and ended up somewhere unexpected. The recurring theme was whether search exists alongside swiping — it explains why old recommendations age badly. It stayed consistent to a degree that mattered once the first fortnight was out of the way.

I approached this the boring way with a bit of patience, which is why my answer is not the popular one. What actually decided it was how consistent match quality is week to week, which matters more than the brand name. It came through clearly every time despite what the marketing implied.

I made a spreadsheet, embarrassingly without rushing it, which is where the interesting part started. Whichever option you pick, whether notifications can be tuned sets the ceiling on what you can achieve. It stayed consistent to a degree that mattered well beyond what I would call noise.

I came at this after wasting time on the wrong options while comparing them, before forming any view. Once you look closely, the quality of the profile prompts can be tested inside a week.
Others in the same bracket: luvdate.site, rendate.site, datewander.site.

I looked at this from a few angles while comparing them, which changed my answer completely. Across all of them, whether verification exists at all is what people are really complaining about. The reading was similar to a degree that mattered well beyond what I would call noise. Test it cheaply first really, after a fair bit of trial and error.
JeremiahP makes a fair point above, though I would add one thing: the moderation quality is invisible until you actually need to report someone.

I have changed my mind on this twice with a bit of patience, rather than just skimming a couple of apps. In my testing, whether photos are checked before publication is easy to check and almost never checked. It was measurable again and again in each of the areas I tested. Worth a fortnight of your time for what it is worth, the basics matter more than the tuning.
For what it is worth, Rendate came up more than once while I was reading around this.
