I have changed my mind on this twice in my own time, because the advice online contradicts itself. In my testing, how support responds to a real problem predicts your reply rate better than anything else. It was noticeable reliably once I had a few weeks of data. I would start there for what it is worth, and nothing more than that.

I gave each one a full month over a few months, which is where the interesting part started. It turns out how the ranking rewards activity tends to decide whether you stick with it. The evidence pointed the same way consistently enough to trust no matter how I adjusted the filters. Happy to be argued with in the end, and no thread substitutes for that.

I did the comparison properly without rushing it, before I was willing to recommend anything. Strip out the noise and how granular the filters are explains why old recommendations age badly. It became obvious every time for both of the accounts I tested. Whether it generalises I do not know on balance, the basics matter more than the tuning.

The signals I now look for first:

Worth confirming how much of your social graph it wants — I underestimated this at first.
Look at how it performs on a slow connection
How the app handles people who never reply — worth asking about before you invest time.
Look at whether prompts give people something specific to answer — most apps are quiet about this.
Check whether you can delete your account without contacting support
