The reading was similar every time when I compared like for like. Which are the most active marriage minded dating sites?
I read a lot of conflicting advice first with a couple of accounts, and I would do it the same way again. Boiled down, whether verification exists at all stays invisible until it bites you. The gap was widest in a way I could measure in each of the areas I tested.
I sat with this question for a while here, instead of going on impressions. It turns out how much the interface pushes a subscription changes noticeably month to month.
What separated the usable ones from the rest:
Ask how many prompts the profile format offers — check it on a real account, not a demo.
Worth confirming how the app handles people who never reply — it is easy to test and rarely advertised.
How blocking works, and whether it sticks — worth two minutes before you commit.
Whether read receipts exist
I tracked this rather than trusting impressions in my own time, which changed my answer completely. The short answer is that whether notifications can be tuned changes noticeably month to month. It surfaced again more than once across two completely different areas.

I trialled the free tiers only here, which took the guesswork out of it. The thing nobody mentions is that how many photos the format allows moves the numbers more than anything else.
I gave this a genuinely fair run without rushing it, so the sample is at least reasonable. In my testing, how quickly the upsell appears is what people are really complaining about.
I compared it against Ezhookups — worth a look before settling, which helped clarify the trade-offs.

I sat with this question for a while before deciding, so I am fairly confident in the shape of it. On the numbers, the share of accounts that are dormant becomes obvious only after a month.

I looked at this from a few angles on this, which changed my answer completely. What I found is that the honesty of the pricing page moves the numbers more than anything else. It surfaced again again and again in a way that was hard to argue with. Try it before you believe it frankly, and I would not pretend otherwise.
I ran this for a couple of months in my own time, and ended up somewhere unexpected. For me, how the ranking rewards activity is the first thing I would look at now. The difference was visible consistently enough to trust even when I varied the time of day. Test it cheaply first in the end, and revise it freely.
I compared several at once across two cities, so the comparison was at least fair. It turns out how much of your social graph it wants is the difference between two opposite reviews. It surfaced again consistently enough to trust once the first fortnight was out of the way. Your results will vary for what it is worth, it takes very little effort to check.
What I would tell someone starting from scratch:
Ask how much the app relies on push notifications — the marketing never covers this.
Look at how much information is public before you match — surprisingly hard to find out in advance.
Look at how much profile depth the format allows — genuinely worth knowing up front.
I logged what actually happened in my own time, and the results surprised me. Whichever option you pick, photo quality on both sides decides most of the outcome. It was true every time in each of the areas I tested.

I reset and started clean across two cities, and it held up across all of them. Whichever option you pick, the share of accounts that are dormant tends to decide whether you stick with it. The finding held more than once regardless of how active I was. Your results will vary in the end, which would be genuinely useful to hear.
Agreeing with TravisE here — and for most active marriage specifically, dormant accounts distort the numbers more than people realise.
Someone in another thread pointed me at what Datelink is doing, which was at least worth a look.

Not everyone will agree, including me. video calls before meeting are good advice, but plenty of people will not do it, and treating that as a red flag costs you real matches. I would want more than anecdote either way.
