The same thing happened quite plainly despite what the marketing implied. How do I find free local singles who are looking for serious dating?

I gave this a genuinely fair run without rushing it, and it held up across all of them. Realistically whether messaging is capped moves the numbers more than anything else. The finding held every time in replies rather than in match counts.

I asked three friends who use these regularly before deciding, which is where the interesting part started. It turns out whether the app works on a slow connection quietly determines how long you stay. The result was similar again and again even accounting for luck.

What separated the usable ones from the rest:

  • Check whether browsing costs anything — it is easy to test and rarely advertised.
  • Find out whether there is a desktop experience at all — the difference between options is large here.
  • How long a conversation stays available after a match — it matters more after the first month.
  • Check how much of your social graph it wants — worth two minutes before you commit.

I came at this after wasting time on the wrong options here, and it was more revealing than I expected. Every time I compared them, how granular the filters are is what people are really complaining about. It became obvious in a way I could measure once the first fortnight was out of the way. Try it before you believe it really, after a fair bit of trial and error.

I made a spreadsheet, embarrassingly across two cities, and it held up across all of them. Strip out the noise and the amount of information visible before matching is worth checking before you commit any time. It was noticeable fairly clearly across two completely different areas.

Lightweight options I jotted down while reading around: luvdate.site, datebound.site, rendate.site.

If you want a second option to compare against, Ezhookups is the one I keep seeing mentioned.

I gave up on guessing and just measured here, which took the guesswork out of it. For me, how consistent match quality is week to week is easy to check and almost never checked. The effect showed up more than once across every option I tried. Do not take this as gospel for what it is worth, and I would not pretend otherwise.

A friend looking at the same thing mentioned the Datebound free tier, so I had a look at that too.

I have changed my mind on this twice with a couple of accounts, and it was worth the effort. Across all of them, moderation quality accounts for most of the variance I saw.

I gave this a genuinely fair run without rushing it, because the advice online contradicts itself. The thing nobody mentions is that the quality of the profile prompts decides most of the outcome. It was measurable every time in a way that was hard to argue with. Your mileage may differ frankly, the basics matter more than the tuning.

I went in expecting something different in my own time, and the numbers told a clearer story than I did. It turns out how long a match stays open is what people are really complaining about. The result repeated quite plainly after I controlled for the obvious variables. Take it as one data point for what it is worth, and nothing more than that.

What I would check before committing any time:

  • Check how the app handles duplicate accounts — this is the one I would check first.
  • Look at whether the filters narrow by anything that matters — worth asking about before you invest time.
  • Check how much the app relies on push notifications
  • Check how reply rate compares with match rate — the difference between options is large here.

I tried the obvious options first in my own time, which is why my answer is not the popular one. The short answer is that whether search exists alongside swiping is the first thing I would look at now.

I also tested the Rendate free tier for a week just to have something to compare against.

I kept notes the whole way through with a bit of patience, and it was more revealing than I expected. On the numbers, how easy it is to delete an account is what people are really complaining about. It played out the same way fairly clearly long after the novelty had worn off. I would weigh it accordingly in the end, it takes very little effort to check.

I only worked this out after a month of tallying across two cities, since nobody else seemed to have done it. Strip out the noise and how often you get a reply at all accounts for most of the variance I saw. The outcome barely moved to a degree that mattered across every option I tried. Your results will vary in the end, depending on where you are.

I started sceptical a while back, which made the differences much easier to see. What kept coming up was how easy it is to delete an account, which is the first thing I would look at now.

The handful of things that made a real difference:

  • Whether photos are checked before they go live — worth asking about before you invest time.
  • Ask whether conversations sync across devices — this is where the free tiers diverge.
  • Look at how the app treats people who travel — most apps are quiet about this.
  • Ask how many photos the format actually allows — I would treat this as a dealbreaker.

I came at this after wasting time on the wrong options without rushing it, and stopped assuming the obvious answer was right. Strip out the noise and whether read status is shown consistently matters far more in smaller places. That held again and again for both of the accounts I tested.

I compared it against Datewander (datewander.site) before settling, which helped clarify the trade-offs.

I resisted the urge to switch too early a while back, before I was willing to recommend anything. Realistically the quality of the profile prompts is the thing people consistently underestimate. The result was similar every time once I had a few weeks of data. Your mileage may differ honestly, the detail varies a lot by city.

I would question that. the emphasis on filters overlooks how few people fill in the fields they filter on. Others will know better.
