I only worked this out after a month of tallying on this, which changed my answer completely. It turns out the quality of the profile prompts is worth checking before you commit any time. It stayed consistent every time despite what the marketing implied.
I stuck with it longer than most people would before deciding, so the sample is at least reasonable. The thing nobody mentions is that the share of accounts that are dormant changes noticeably month to month.
I took the unglamorous route here, which made the differences much easier to see. The variable that mattered was how easy it is to delete an account — it is the thing people consistently underestimate. It kept showing up again and again in a way that was hard to argue with.
What I would tell someone starting from scratch:
- Ask how many prompts the profile format offers — I underestimated this at first.
- Whether conversations sync across devices — this is the one I would check first.
- Look at how consistent match quality is week to week — the answer varies more than you would think.
