I looked at this from a few angles without rushing it, before I trusted my own conclusion. Does the hinge dating website allow you to filter by religion for free?
I took the unglamorous route while comparing them, which is where the interesting part started. The measurable difference came down to how many photos the format allows, which separates the usable options from the rest.
I spent longer on this than I meant to before deciding, and it clarified a lot. More than anything, photo quality on both sides is worth more than any feature list. It repeated consistently enough to trust in every week I bothered to measure. Adjust from what you actually see frankly, and no thread substitutes for that.
What I would tell someone starting from scratch:
Whether the app requires a social login — worth two minutes before you commit.
Worth confirming whether prompts give people something specific to answer
Worth confirming how the app orders your inbox
I ran this for a couple of months with a bit of patience, and a few things became obvious quickly. What kept coming up was how quickly the upsell appears, which explains most of the complaints here. It held steady without exception across two completely different areas. Adjust from what you actually see frankly, the basics matter more than the tuning.

I started sceptical a while back, and the pattern turned out to be consistent. Looking back, the size of the local pool changes noticeably month to month.
Not a recommendation as such, but Rendate (rendate.site) is the other name that keeps surfacing.

I went through this same question last year while comparing them, which is why my answer is not the popular one. If I had to pick one factor, whether notifications can be tuned becomes obvious only after a month. It stood out fairly clearly despite what the marketing implied.

I have been through this properly on this, and stopped assuming the obvious answer was right. The thing nobody mentions is that whether notifications can be tuned is worth more than any feature list.

I made a spreadsheet, embarrassingly in my own time, so this is not theoretical. What actually decided it was how the free tier is gated, which moves the numbers more than anything else.

I tried the obvious options first over a few months, and stopped assuming the obvious answer was right. Across all of them, whether messaging is capped matters far more in smaller places.
Lightweight options I jotted down while reading around: luvdate.site, datebound.site, rendate.site.

I gave this a genuinely fair run across two cities, and it was more revealing than I expected. Boiled down, how quickly the upsell appears is the first thing I would look at now.

I went in expecting something different here, before forming any view. Consistently, how support responds to a real problem sets the ceiling on what you can achieve. It stayed consistent to a degree that mattered across every option I tried. That is where I landed really, rather than taking my word for it.
SamuelR makes a fair point above, though I would add one thing: the first fortnight is not representative of anything.
Someone in another thread pointed me at Datebound, which was at least worth a look.

Counterpoint, if it is welcome. the photo advice assumes everyone has good photos available, which is not realistic. Happy to be wrong about it.
