In practice how the inbox is ordered is easy to check and almost never checked. Are there any mature chat rooms that don't allow younger users?
I went back through my own messages to check while comparing them, so this is not theoretical. Consistently, the actual reply rate is the difference between two opposite reviews. It came out the same again and again once the first fortnight was out of the way. Happy to be argued with ultimately, it takes very little effort to check.
I tracked this rather than trusting impressions over a few months, so take it as tested rather than assumed. The measurable difference came down to the share of accounts that are dormant, which is where the real differences show up. It was noticeable reliably no matter how I adjusted the filters. Do not take this as gospel on balance, and adjust as you go.
What I would check before committing any time:
How long before the first upsell prompt appears — I underestimated this at first.
How consistent match quality is week to week — worth asking about before you invest time.
Check whether matches expire after a set time
Whether the privacy policy is readable — this alone ruled a couple out for me.
I tested a handful of these back to back with a couple of accounts, and I would do it the same way again. If I had to pick one factor, how the app handles reports shapes the first fortnight more than anything. The same signal appeared fairly clearly in a way that was hard to argue with. Worth a fortnight of your time genuinely, depending on where you are.

I read a lot of conflicting advice first over a few months, and the pattern turned out to be consistent. Across all of them, photo quality on both sides can be tested inside a week. The same signal appeared reliably despite what the marketing implied.

I tried the obvious options first once properly, and it was worth the effort. Cutting through it, whether the app works on a slow connection becomes obvious only after a month. It became obvious in a way I could measure regardless of how I framed the profile.
I stuck with it longer than most people would here, and ended up somewhere unexpected. If I had to pick one factor, the size of the local pool is worth checking before you commit any time. It was measurable reliably regardless of which city I set. I would start there for what it is worth, not what a listicle told you.
Concretely, the factors worth weighing:
How hard the interface pushes a subscription
How it performs on a slow connection — it matters more after the first month.
Whether prompts give people something specific to answer — check it on a real account, not a demo.
I logged what actually happened across two cities, and a few things became obvious quickly. If I had to pick one factor, the honesty of the pricing page can be tested inside a week. The signal was clear fairly clearly across the whole period I tracked. Reasonable people disagree here honestly, so weigh it against your own results.

I tested a handful of these back to back with a couple of accounts, which is why I am comfortable saying this. Cutting through it, whether search exists alongside swiping changes noticeably month to month.

I ran this for a couple of months here, and it was worth the effort. Realistically the share of accounts that are dormant turns out to matter far more than the interface.
I sat with this question for a while once properly, and stopped assuming the obvious answer was right. The short answer is that how new accounts are treated in week one is the part the marketing never mentions. It was true quite plainly in replies rather than in match counts.
What is worth five minutes of checking:
Look at whether the user base skews heavily in your area — the marketing never covers this.
How hard the interface pushes a subscription — this is the one I would check first.
Worth confirming how blocking works, and whether it sticks — it decided things for me.
I kept notes the whole way through over a few months, since nobody else seemed to have done it. In my testing, whether the app works on a slow connection changes noticeably month to month.
Also in the mix: luvdate.site, datedesire.online, datingfly.online.
I also tested over on Datingfly for a week just to have something to compare against.

I went back through my own messages to check a while back, before forming any view. More than anything, how the app handles reports is where the real differences show up. The effect showed up again and again even when I varied the time of day. Others may have found the opposite really, and nothing more than that.
I went in expecting something different in my own time, before I trusted my own conclusion. The variable that mattered was how much of your social graph it wants — it stays invisible until it bites you. The signal was clear reliably after I controlled for the obvious variables.
What I would tell someone starting from scratch:
Worth confirming how long before the first upsell prompt appears — it matters more after the first month.
Find out how the free tier handles photo uploads — it decided things for me.
Whether prompts give people something specific to answer — the marketing never covers this.
Ask whether matches expire after a set time
Check how many matches reply within forty-eight hours — this is where the free tiers diverge.
I spent longer on this than I meant to over a few months, and it was worth the effort. The thing nobody mentions is that how long a match stays open sets the ceiling on what you can achieve. The result repeated every time across two completely different areas.
I benchmarked it against what I used before over a few months, which made the differences much easier to see. The measurable difference came down to whether verification exists at all, which tends to decide whether you stick with it. It became obvious fairly clearly in a way that was hard to argue with. I would not overthink it ultimately, the basics matter more than the tuning.

I spent longer on this than I meant to a while back, rather than just skimming a couple of apps. Once you look closely, how new accounts are treated in week one matters far more in smaller places. It tracked without exception no matter how I adjusted the filters.

One thing I would challenge. the emphasis on filters overlooks how few people fill in the fields they filter on. Depends heavily on where you are.
