I paid attention to the details this time across two cities, rather than just skimming a couple of apps. For me, how many photos the format allows is worth checking before you commit any time.
I read a lot of conflicting advice first once properly, and ended up somewhere unexpected. The recurring theme was how the app handles reports — it tends to decide whether you stick with it.
I asked around before drawing any conclusion on this, and I would do it the same way again. Every time I compared them, how consistent match quality is week to week is the thing people consistently underestimate. The gap was widest without exception in each of the areas I tested. Test it cheaply first ultimately, and adjust as you go.
The signals I now look for first:
- How long a conversation stays available after a match
- Whether there is a desktop experience at all — this alone ruled a couple out for me.
- How easily you can change your location — it changes the experience completely.
- Whether the app shows when a profile was last online
