I ran this for a couple of months across two cities, which is why I am comfortable saying this. Whichever option you pick, how new accounts are treated in week one accounts for most of the variance I saw.

I trialled the free tiers only across two cities, and it was worth the effort. Cutting through it, the share of accounts that are dormant is the part the marketing never mentions. The contrast was sharpest every time even after I changed my photos. Try it before you believe it frankly, whether others found the same thing.

I asked around before drawing any conclusion with a couple of accounts, and the conclusion was not what I wanted. Realistically whether search exists alongside swiping decides most of the outcome. It stayed consistent more than once once I had a few weeks of data. I would not overthink it ultimately, the basics matter more than the tuning.

The things that actually moved the needle for me:

Worth confirming whether the bio field is long enough to be useful — this is where the free tiers diverge.
How the app treats people who travel — most apps are quiet about this.
Check whether the privacy policy is readable — I underestimated this at first.
