What separated the usable ones from the rest:

Whether the app requires a social login — the difference between options is large here.
Worth confirming whether the user base skews heavily in your area — genuinely worth knowing up front.
Find out whether there is a web version as well as an app — it is easy to test and rarely advertised.
Whether you can finish a conversation without hitting a paywall — genuinely worth knowing up front.
