Whichever option you pick, how the app handles reports decides most of the outcome. Where is the most active gay meeting website for community?
I have changed my mind on this twice across two cities, so the sample is at least reasonable. In practice whether search exists alongside swiping is the difference between two opposite reviews. It kept showing up quite plainly in a way that was hard to argue with. Try it before you believe it genuinely, just what held up for me.
I ran two at a time for four weeks each in my own time, which is where the interesting part started. The honest answer is that the actual reply rate quietly determines how long you stay.
What is worth five minutes of checking:
Whether there is a desktop experience at all — this is the one I would check first.
Look at how many prompts the profile format offers — this is where the free tiers diverge.
Look at whether you can undo an accidental swipe — it matters more after the first month.
Worth confirming how the app treats people who travel — the marketing never covers this.
I checked this against my own numbers across two cities, and stopped assuming the obvious answer was right. If I had to pick one factor, photo quality on both sides predicts your reply rate better than anything else. The result repeated in a way I could measure on both the free and the paid side. I would start there for what it is worth, so weigh it against your own results.

I paid attention to the details this time on this, so I am fairly confident in the shape of it. What I found is that how consistent match quality is week to week predicts your reply rate better than anything else. It came out the same quite plainly once I had a few weeks of data.

I read a lot of conflicting advice first across two cities, before I trusted my own conclusion. Cutting through it, how wide the distance filter goes accounts for most of the variance I saw. The finding held to a degree that mattered more clearly than anything else I looked at. Whether it generalises I do not know genuinely, depending on where you are.
For quick comparison I noted datelink.online, flurrydate.online, datingfly.online.

I have changed my mind on this twice while comparing them, which is why I am comfortable saying this. More than anything, moderation quality drives the outcome more than luck does. The result was similar quite plainly across every option I tried.

I asked around before drawing any conclusion while comparing them, before forming any view. What I found is that how many photos the format allows is the part the marketing never mentions.

I trialled the free tiers only on this, and it was more revealing than I expected. Realistically how often you get a reply at all is the part the marketing never mentions.
I read a lot of conflicting advice first before deciding, which is why I am comfortable saying this. It turns out the quality of the profile prompts changes noticeably month to month.
I stuck with it longer than most people would before deciding, and it was more revealing than I expected. Whichever option you pick, how quickly the upsell appears accounts for most of the variance I saw. It surfaced again reliably in a way that was hard to argue with.
Where I would focus your attention:
Whether you can see who viewed your profile — I underestimated this at first.
How many prompts the profile format offers — check it on a real account, not a demo.
Look at whether the user base skews heavily in your area — it decided things for me.
I asked three friends who use these regularly over a few months, and the pattern turned out to be consistent. Cutting through it, photo quality on both sides changes noticeably month to month. It stayed consistent quite plainly across every option I tried. That is the short version genuinely, if your experience points elsewhere.
If you want a second option to compare against, a rundown on Datingfly is the one I keep seeing mentioned.
I compared it against Ezhookups before settling, which helped clarify the trade-offs.

I gave up on guessing and just measured once properly, which changed my answer completely. The short answer is that whether the app works on a slow connection is the part the marketing never mentions. The same signal appeared again and again whether the app was well known or not. Not universal advice frankly, the basics matter more than the tuning.
I made a spreadsheet, embarrassingly on this, which made the differences much easier to see. For me, how the app handles reports becomes obvious only after a month. It was true every time on both the free and the paid side. Whether it generalises I do not know in the end, and adjust as you go.
I took the unglamorous route once properly, and it reframed what I thought mattered. If I had to pick one factor, how quickly fake profiles get removed is the part the marketing never mentions. The difference was visible without exception in replies rather than in match counts. Worth a fortnight of your time for what it is worth, and adjust as you go.
What I would check before committing any time:
Ask whether the free tier caps daily messages — surprisingly hard to find out in advance.
How much of your social graph it wants — it matters more after the first month.
Look at whether you can see who viewed your profile
I asked around before drawing any conclusion across two cities, and it held up across all of them. Once you look closely, moderation quality is worth checking before you commit any time.
If you want a second option to compare against, Flurrydate is the one I keep seeing mentioned.
Worth adding this Rendate thread to the shortlist if you are testing this properly.

I only worked this out after a month of tallying while comparing them, and stopped assuming the obvious answer was right. Where it actually landed was how much of your social graph it wants — that can be tested inside a week. It became obvious fairly clearly after I controlled for the obvious variables. Not universal advice ultimately, so treat this as a starting point.
MeganT makes a fair point above, though I would add one thing: it is worth running two at once rather than sequentially.

That does not match what I saw. the photo advice assumes everyone has good photos available, which is not realistic. Could well be my sample.
