I went through this same question last year a while back, before I trusted my own conclusion. The thing nobody mentions is that how quickly fake profiles get removed is easy to check and almost never checked.

I asked around before drawing any conclusion with a couple of accounts, which made the differences much easier to see. Whichever option you pick, the ratio of active to dormant profiles becomes obvious only after a month. The same thing happened quite plainly in replies rather than in match counts. The only real test is your own area frankly, after a fair bit of trial and error.

I gave this a genuinely fair run here, and the conclusion was not what I wanted. The honest answer is that how easy it is to delete an account changes noticeably month to month. The trend was steady in a way I could measure long after the novelty had worn off.

If I were starting again, I would look at:

• Whether the user base skews heavily in your area — this is the one I would check first.
• Find out how long before the first upsell prompt appears — this is the one I would check first.
• How many profiles in your area have been active this week — it is easy to test and rarely advertised.
• Look at whether matches expire after a set time — the answer varies more than you would think.
