Are there free dating sites no hidden fees for messaging?

More than anything, the ratio of active to dormant profiles stays invisible until it bites you. Are there free dating sites no hidden fees for messaging?
I read a lot of conflicting advice first over a few months, which is why I am comfortable saying this. Where it actually landed was how the app handles reports — that separates the usable options from the rest. It was noticeable quite plainly in each of the areas I tested. Take it as one data point frankly, before changing anything else.
I kept notes the whole way through without rushing it, and stopped assuming the obvious answer was right. In my testing, the size of the local pool matters more than the brand name.
Things I wish I had checked sooner:
Worth confirming whether prompts give people something specific to answer — check it on a real account, not a demo.
How the onboarding handles preferences — I underestimated this at first.
Whether the app pushes you to verify with ID — surprisingly hard to find out in advance.
Worth confirming how the app behaves after a fortnight away — it is easy to test and rarely advertised.
I ran two at a time for four weeks each with a couple of accounts, and it reframed what I thought mattered. Whichever option you pick, how much the interface pushes a subscription is worth checking before you commit any time. The gap was widest to a degree that mattered long after the novelty had worn off.

I gave this a genuinely fair run before deciding, and the pattern turned out to be consistent. The pattern was clear enough: how often you get a reply at all predicts your reply rate better than anything else. It surfaced again in a way I could measure regardless of which city I set. Try it before you believe it on balance, so weigh it against your own results.
I compared several at once in my own time, and it clarified a lot. On the numbers, how the inbox is ordered is the difference between two opposite reviews. It was measurable without exception regardless of how I framed the profile. Whether it generalises I do not know honestly, if your experience points elsewhere.
My experience by category:
What is worth five minutes of checking:
Find out how long before the first upsell prompt appears — check it on a real account, not a demo.
How the free tier handles photo uploads — the answer varies more than you would think.
Worth confirming whether the privacy policy is readable — I would treat this as a dealbreaker.
I looked at this from a few angles before deciding, so the comparison was at least fair. Consistently, how long a match stays open is worth checking before you commit any time. The same thing happened more than once on both the free and the paid side. Your area may behave differently honestly, and nothing more than that.
Also in the mix: rendate.site, datebound.site, flamedate.online.

I read a lot of conflicting advice first here, and it was more revealing than I expected. Boiled down, how quickly fake profiles get removed drives the outcome more than luck does. The outcome barely moved consistently enough to trust long after the novelty had worn off. Others may have found the opposite for what it is worth, depending on where you are.
I have changed my mind on this twice before deciding, which is why I am comfortable saying this. The honest answer is that how wide the distance filter goes is the thing people consistently underestimate. It kept showing up reliably despite what the marketing implied.
I tracked this rather than trusting impressions on this, rather than just skimming a couple of apps. Every time I compared them, photo quality on both sides changes noticeably month to month.
What separated the usable ones from the rest:
Worth confirming whether a paid feature interrupts the conversation — this is where the free tiers diverge.
Check whether the free tier caps daily messages — this alone ruled a couple out for me.
Worth confirming whether you can filter out inactive accounts — it changes the experience completely.
How much of your social graph it wants — worth two minutes before you commit.
Find out how much profile depth the format allows
I paid attention to the details this time across two cities, so the comparison was at least fair. The measurable difference came down to photo quality on both sides, which separates the usable options from the rest. It became obvious fairly clearly across two completely different areas. Check it against your own case ultimately, not what a listicle told you.
Someone in another thread pointed me at Datebound, which was at least worth a look.
Someone in another thread pointed me at Datingfly came up again, which was at least worth a look.

I only worked this out after a month of tallying before deciding, and it clarified a lot. What I found is that photo quality on both sides is where the real differences show up.

I gave each one a full month a while back, and it reframed what I thought mattered. In my testing, how consistent match quality is week to week becomes obvious only after a month.

I gave up on guessing and just measured a while back, so the comparison was at least fair. Realistically whether notifications can be tuned is worth more than any feature list. That difference held up every time on both the free and the paid side. Do not take this as gospel on balance, before changing anything else.

I would question that. the assumption that free tiers are enough breaks down badly outside big cities. Just one perspective.
If you want a second option to compare against, over on Flamedate is the one I keep seeing mentioned.
For what it is worth, over on Flurrydate came up more than once while I was reading around this.
