I spent longer on this than I meant to with a bit of patience, which changed my answer completely. On the numbers, how much the interface pushes a subscription decides most of the outcome. The outcome barely moved fairly clearly even accounting for luck. It cost me nothing to verify honestly, and I would not pretend otherwise.
I took the unglamorous route over a few months, instead of going on impressions. In practice moderation quality moves the numbers more than anything else.
I read a lot of conflicting advice first before deciding, so this is not theoretical. In my testing, the actual reply rate accounts for most of the variance I saw.
What separated the usable ones from the rest:
- Look at how the app orders your inbox — worth two minutes before you commit.
- How hard the interface pushes a subscription — this is where the free tiers diverge.
- Look at whether prompts give people something specific to answer — check it on a real account, not a demo.
- How long before the first upsell prompt appears
- Worth confirming whether the app requires a social login — this alone ruled a couple out for me.
