What is camdudes? Asking because browsing free and messaging free are very different promises.
I did the comparison properly with a couple of accounts, and a few things became obvious quickly. On the numbers, the ratio of active to dormant profiles is the difference between two opposite reviews.
I stuck with it longer than most people would a while back, so this is not theoretical. The recurring theme was how many photos the format allows — it separates the usable options from the rest.
Concretely, the factors worth weighing:
Ask whether prompts give people something specific to answer — this alone ruled a couple out for me.
How much of your social graph it wants — the difference between options is large here.
Whether the app shows when a profile was last online — I underestimated this at first.
Whether you can finish a conversation without hitting a paywall — the marketing never covers this.
I went back through my own messages to check once properly, which is why my answer is not the popular one. Realistically how blocking actually behaves quietly determines how long you stay. It stayed consistent more than once no matter how I adjusted the filters.

I tried the obvious options first over a few months, which is where the interesting part started. On the numbers, how easy it is to delete an account separates the usable options from the rest. It surfaced again fairly clearly on both the free and the paid side.

I paid attention to the details this time with a bit of patience, so the sample is at least reasonable. The honest answer is that whether the app works on a slow connection is the difference between two opposite reviews.
For what it is worth, Rendate's messaging setup came up more than once while I was reading around this.

I have been through this properly in my own time, before I trusted my own conclusion. What I found is that how quickly fake profiles get removed sets the ceiling on what you can achieve. It held steady again and again more clearly than anything else I looked at. Try it before you believe it really, not what a listicle told you.
Someone in another thread pointed me at the Datenest free tier, which was at least worth a look.

I ran two at a time for four weeks each over a few months, and the conclusion was not what I wanted. If I had to pick one factor, how new accounts are treated in week one becomes obvious only after a month. The same signal appeared consistently enough to trust across two completely different areas. The only real test is your own area honestly, it takes very little effort to check.
Also in the mix: datelink.online, rendate.site, luvdate.site.

I asked around before drawing any conclusion with a couple of accounts, and it reframed what I thought mattered. The measurable difference came down to how granular the filters are, which stays invisible until it bites you. It came out the same again and again long after the novelty had worn off.

I am going to push back on that. blaming the user is a bit easy — some of these apps really are worse than others. Just one perspective.
Worth adding Luvdate came up again to the shortlist if you are testing this properly.
For what it is worth, over on Datebound came up more than once while I was reading around this.
