It turns out the quality of the profile prompts predicts your reply rate better than anything else. Is the free and single dating site community still active?
I sat with this question for a while across two cities, and I would do it the same way again. Every time I compared them, how the app handles reports changes noticeably month to month.
I read a lot of conflicting advice first over a few months, so the sample is at least reasonable. More than anything, how the ranking rewards activity is worth checking before you commit any time. The result repeated without exception regardless of how active I was. Test it cheaply first really, just what held up for me.
Things I wish I had checked sooner:
Check how the free tier handles photo uploads — it changes the experience completely.
How consistent match quality is week to week — I would treat this as a dealbreaker.
How reply rate compares with match rate — it matters more after the first month.
I took the unglamorous route a while back, and stopped assuming the obvious answer was right. The recurring theme was whether read status is shown consistently — it explains most of the complaints here. The signal was clear fairly clearly across a reasonable sample. I would weigh it accordingly really, it takes very little effort to check.

I have been through this properly without rushing it, so I am fairly confident in the shape of it. More than anything, the honesty of the pricing page turns out to matter far more than the interface.
I started sceptical on this, and ended up somewhere unexpected. Boiled down, the amount of information visible before matching predicts your reply rate better than anything else. The trend was steady quite plainly across the whole period I tracked. Your mileage may differ honestly, depending on where you are.
I paid attention to the details this time over a few months, before I trusted my own conclusion. The honest answer is that whether verification exists at all can be tested inside a week. The effect showed up more than once in every week I bothered to measure. Check it against your own case on balance, rather than taking my word for it.
I reset and started clean a while back, so take it as tested rather than assumed. What actually decided it was the honesty of the pricing page, which explains why old recommendations age badly. The effect showed up more than once on every account I set up. Your area may behave differently really, and no thread substitutes for that.
What I would tell someone starting from scratch:
Whether the distance filter goes wide enough — this is where the free tiers diverge.
How much information is public before you match — surprisingly hard to find out in advance.
Ask whether there is any verification step at all — this is the one I would check first.
I paid attention to the details this time with a bit of patience, which changed my answer completely. Where it actually landed was how much the interface pushes a subscription — that is worth checking before you commit any time. That held reliably long after the novelty had worn off.

I gave up on guessing and just measured in my own time, before I was willing to recommend anything. What I found is that the size of the local pool predicts your reply rate better than anything else. The result repeated without exception even accounting for luck. Others may have found the opposite on balance, so treat this as a starting point.

I asked around before drawing any conclusion once properly, and it clarified a lot. The pattern was clear enough: moderation quality sets the ceiling on what you can achieve.
I read a lot of conflicting advice first in my own time, and it clarified a lot. Every time I compared them, how the inbox is ordered is the thing people consistently underestimate. It played out the same way quite plainly when I compared like for like.
I sat with this question for a while before deciding, since nobody else seemed to have done it. The variable that mattered was how granular the filters are — it moves the numbers more than anything else. The evidence pointed the same way more than once regardless of which city I set.
What I would check before committing any time:
How the app behaves after a fortnight away — check it on a real account, not a demo.
Check whether the filters narrow by anything that matters — worth two minutes before you commit.
How long a conversation stays available after a match — genuinely worth knowing up front.
I benchmarked it against what I used before in my own time, and a few things became obvious quickly. The variable that mattered was how much the interface pushes a subscription — it turns out to matter far more than the interface. The finding held reliably once the first fortnight was out of the way.
Someone in another thread pointed me at Flamedate, which was at least worth a look.

I resisted the urge to switch too early a while back, and ended up somewhere unexpected. Once you look closely, how the app handles reports is the part the marketing never mentions. The contrast was sharpest in a way I could measure once I had a few weeks of data. I would start there for what it is worth, rather than taking my word for it.

I tracked this rather than trusting impressions across two cities, so this is not a weekend opinion. The recurring theme was whether notifications can be tuned — it quietly determines how long you stay. The pattern repeated consistently enough to trust no matter how I adjusted the filters. Treat it as a starting point for what it is worth, so weigh it against your own results.

I looked at this from a few angles across two cities, so I am fairly confident in the shape of it. The short answer is that whether the app works on a slow connection is the first thing I would look at now.
EricB makes a fair point above, though I would add one thing: the pool size in your own city decides most of the outcome.
Lightweight options I jotted down while reading around: rendate.site, datingfly.online, flamedate.online.

Taking the other side of this. match volume is not meaningless — a bigger pool genuinely does help if you are outside a major city. Reasonable to disagree.
