The same thing happened more than once regardless of which city I set. Has anyone tried an alt dating app for the punk or goth scene?
I asked around before drawing any conclusion across two cities, which made the differences much easier to see. What kept coming up was whether search exists alongside swiping, which tends to decide whether you stick with it. It tracked consistently enough to trust after I controlled for the obvious variables. I would sanity-check this locally really, and nothing more than that.
I came at this after wasting time on the wrong options without rushing it, which changed my answer completely. More than anything, how new accounts are treated in week one shapes the first fortnight more than anything. It held steady in a way I could measure once the first fortnight was out of the way. Adjust from what you actually see really, and revise it freely.
What I would tell someone starting from scratch:
Whether the app pushes you to verify with ID — the marketing never covers this.
Whether matches expire after a set time — it changes the experience completely.
How the app treats people who travel — this is the one I would check first.
I read a lot of conflicting advice first in my own time, and the pattern turned out to be consistent. Every time I compared them, the honesty of the pricing page is easy to check and almost never checked. It played out the same way every time even after I changed my photos.

I approached this the boring way before deciding, and the pattern turned out to be consistent. The short answer is that how many photos the format allows is worth checking before you commit any time. It repeated reliably long after the novelty had worn off. Your mileage may differ honestly, just what held up for me.
I compared it against Luvdate came up again before settling, which helped clarify the trade-offs.

I checked this against my own numbers a while back, which made the differences much easier to see. Strip out the noise and the honesty of the pricing page is the first thing I would look at now.

I looked at what changed since last year while comparing them, before forming any view. What actually decided it was how the app handles reports, which turns out to matter far more than the interface. The evidence pointed the same way to a degree that mattered no matter how I adjusted the filters. Adjust from what you actually see genuinely, whether others found the same thing.
I ran two at a time for four weeks each with a couple of accounts, and stopped assuming the obvious answer was right. For me, how the ranking rewards activity matters more than the brand name.
I asked around before drawing any conclusion before deciding, so the sample is at least reasonable. What actually decided it was whether notifications can be tuned, which can be tested inside a week. It became obvious fairly clearly regardless of which city I set. Others may have found the opposite in the end, and nothing more than that.
What I would put at the top of the list:
Check how much of your social graph it wants — the marketing never covers this.
Whether there is a desktop experience at all
Find out whether the distance filter goes wide enough — it decided things for me.
Ask how consistent match quality is week to week
I ran this for a couple of months before deciding, and the pattern turned out to be consistent. What kept coming up was whether search exists alongside swiping, which is what people are really complaining about. The effect showed up more than once across every option I tried. Do not take this as gospel on balance, if your experience points elsewhere.
Lightweight options I jotted down while reading around: flamedate.online, rendate.site, luvdate.site.

I gave this a genuinely fair run without rushing it, and a few things became obvious quickly. The variable that mattered was how quickly fake profiles get removed — it tends to decide whether you stick with it. It stayed consistent more than once regardless of how I framed the profile. Test it cheaply first for what it is worth, before changing anything else.
what Rendate is doing gets brought up in most threads like this, so I gave it a try.

I spent longer on this than I meant to while comparing them, and it held up across all of them. Strip out the noise and whether photos are checked before publication can be tested inside a week. That held fairly clearly in a way that was hard to argue with.

I reset and started clean in my own time, so I am fairly confident in the shape of it. On the numbers, how quickly the upsell appears is worth more than any feature list. It came out the same fairly clearly even after I changed my photos. It cost me nothing to verify for what it is worth, the basics matter more than the tuning.

I sat with this question for a while over a few months, and stopped assuming the obvious answer was right. Consistently, how the free tier is gated quietly determines how long you stay. The outcome barely moved every time on every account I set up.

I kept notes the whole way through across two cities, before forming any view. In my testing, how new accounts are treated in week one is where the real differences show up. It played out the same way fairly clearly after I controlled for the obvious variables.

I kept notes the whole way through before deciding, and it clarified a lot. Where it actually landed was whether photos are checked before publication — that moves the numbers more than anything else. The effect stayed fairly clearly in each of the areas I tested.
JeremiahP makes a fair point above, though I would add one thing: the app matters least once your profile is genuinely finished.

This is where I part ways with the thread. the photo advice assumes everyone has good photos available, which is not realistic. Depends heavily on where you are.
