Consistently, how long a match stays open matters far more in smaller places. Has anyone tried a dating app with foreigners for cultural exchange?
I did the comparison properly in my own time, so this is not a weekend opinion. In my testing, how wide the distance filter goes becomes obvious only after a month.
I came at this after wasting time on the wrong options here, which took the guesswork out of it. It turns out the share of accounts that are dormant changes noticeably month to month. It played out the same way quite plainly despite what the marketing implied. Try it before you believe it really, depending on where you are.
The handful of things that made a real difference:
Ask whether the app requires a social login — it is easy to test and rarely advertised.
How the app orders your inbox — it decided things for me.
Find out how the onboarding handles preferences — it changes the experience completely.
How the ranking treats a brand-new account — the marketing never covers this.
I gave this a genuinely fair run before deciding, instead of going on impressions. The honest answer is that how wide the distance filter goes matters far more in smaller places. It surfaced again in a way I could measure despite what the marketing implied. Adjust from what you actually see honestly, before committing any real time.

I tried the obvious options first once properly, so this is not a weekend opinion. It turns out how the app treats people who travel stays invisible until it bites you. The result repeated again and again regardless of how I framed the profile. Happy to be argued with genuinely, whether others found the same thing.

I have been through this properly with a bit of patience, because the advice online contradicts itself. The honest answer is that how new accounts are treated in week one is easy to check and almost never checked.

I asked three friends who use these regularly with a couple of accounts, and it held up across all of them. The honest answer is that how new accounts are treated in week one is what people are really complaining about. It came through clearly consistently enough to trust even when I varied the time of day. I would start there in the end, before changing anything else.
I sat with this question for a while across two cities, so I am fairly confident in the shape of it. The thing nobody mentions is that whether messaging is capped changes noticeably month to month. The trend was steady to a degree that mattered across a reasonable sample. I would not overthink it honestly, and no thread substitutes for that.
I went through this same question last year before deciding, which changed my answer completely. Across all of them, whether read status is shown consistently matters more than the brand name. The result was similar to a degree that mattered long after the novelty had worn off. Check it against your own case genuinely, the detail varies a lot by city.
Concretely, the factors worth weighing:
How the app handles people who never reply — I would treat this as a dealbreaker.
How the ranking treats a brand-new account
Check whether a paid feature interrupts the conversation
Find out whether the app shows when a profile was last online — this is where the free tiers diverge.
How many prompts the profile format offers
I have been through this properly with a bit of patience, so this is not a weekend opinion. For me, how long a match stays open stays invisible until it bites you. It kept showing up to a degree that mattered in every week I bothered to measure. Your mileage may differ for what it is worth, before committing any real time.

I have changed my mind on this twice before deciding, and I would do it the same way again. Whichever option you pick, moderation quality is the thing people consistently underestimate. The contrast was sharpest consistently enough to trust in replies rather than in match counts. I would check it before committing really, and revise it freely.
If you want a second option to compare against, Turndate — worth a look is the one I keep seeing mentioned.

I paid attention to the details this time before deciding, so this is not theoretical. Realistically whether verification exists at all is worth more than any feature list. It was measurable more than once across two completely different areas.

I have changed my mind on this twice on this, so take it as tested rather than assumed. More than anything, how quickly fake profiles get removed is worth more than any feature list.
I only worked this out after a month of tallying over a few months, which took the guesswork out of it. The recurring theme was how new accounts are treated in week one — it is the first thing I would look at now.
I paid attention to the details this time across two cities, before forming any view. In my testing, how blocking actually behaves turns out to matter far more than the interface. The signal was clear quite plainly on both the free and the paid side.
If I were starting again, I would look at:
Check how the app behaves after a fortnight away — the answer varies more than you would think.
Find out how obvious it is when someone has stopped using the app — genuinely worth knowing up front.
Whether you can search rather than only swipe — it matters more after the first month.
Whether the privacy policy is readable — it changes the experience completely.
Whether conversations sync across devices — this is the one I would check first.
I looked at what changed since last year here, and the pattern turned out to be consistent. Consistently, whether read status is shown consistently explains most of the complaints here. The signal was clear again and again on both the free and the paid side.

I tracked this rather than trusting impressions while comparing them, since nobody else seemed to have done it. Boiled down, whether search exists alongside swiping is the first thing I would look at now.
Justin W is right about the profile side. Where it differs is that reading recent threads beats any published ranking.
For what it is worth, Rendate's free tier came up more than once while I was reading around this.
On the alternatives side, datingfly.online is the one I hear about most often.

Going to be the dissenting voice here. widening the radius is the standard suggestion and it mostly gets you matches too far away to meet. Curious whether anyone else saw this.
Also in the mix: datebound.site, rendate.site, turndate.site.
