I started sceptical on this, and it reframed what I thought mattered. Consistently, how granular the filters are drives the outcome more than luck does.

I paid attention to the details this time before deciding, and a few things became obvious quickly. On the numbers, how much the interface pushes a subscription is the thing people consistently underestimate. It repeated without exception for both of the accounts I tested. I would be curious for what it is worth, it takes very little effort to check.

I asked around before drawing any conclusion on this, before I trusted my own conclusion. Once you look closely, whether notifications can be tuned is the first thing I would look at now.

Where I would focus your attention:

How much of your social graph it wants — worth asking about before you invest time.
Whether the privacy policy is readable — surprisingly hard to find out in advance.
Check whether there is any verification step at all — the marketing never covers this.
