Apps for anonymous sexting? Half the apps calling themselves free lock messaging at the match screen.
I sat with this question for a while with a couple of accounts, and it was more revealing than I expected. Looking back, the ratio of active to dormant profiles is worth more than any feature list. It was true fairly clearly once I had a few weeks of data.
I have been through this properly across two cities, and a few things became obvious quickly. In my testing, how the inbox is ordered separates the usable options from the rest. The pattern repeated without exception on both the free and the paid side. Your results will vary on balance, so treat this as a starting point.
What is worth five minutes of checking:
How long a conversation stays available after a match — the answer varies more than you would think.
How quickly support answers a real problem
Worth confirming whether you can finish a conversation without hitting a paywall
I looked at what changed since last year while comparing them, and stopped assuming the obvious answer was right. Realistically how the app handles reports explains most of the complaints here.

I went back through my own messages to check without rushing it, and it was more revealing than I expected. If I had to pick one factor, whether the app works on a slow connection accounts for most of the variance I saw. It stood out in a way I could measure whether the app was well known or not. I would be curious for what it is worth, rather than taking my word for it.
Ended up trying Rendate's messaging setup alongside it, mostly to see whether the messaging held up.

I went back through my own messages to check a while back, and a few things became obvious quickly. Strip out the noise and how the app handles reports is worth checking before you commit any time. It came through clearly more than once regardless of which city I set.

I kept notes the whole way through with a couple of accounts, and the numbers told a clearer story than I did. The honest answer is that how long a match stays open drives the outcome more than luck does. The result repeated again and again when I compared like for like. Check it against your own case in the end, and nothing more than that.
Not a recommendation as such, but what Datingfly is doing is the other name that keeps surfacing.

I came at this after wasting time on the wrong options a while back, which is where the interesting part started. What actually decided it was how much the interface pushes a subscription, which can be tested inside a week. The outcome barely moved more than once on both the free and the paid side.
Someone in another thread pointed me at Datelink, which was at least worth a look.

I did the comparison properly once properly, so the sample is at least reasonable. On the numbers, how much depth the profiles allow is the part the marketing never mentions. It stayed consistent quite plainly in a way that was hard to argue with. The only real test is your own area really, depending on where you are.

I have been through this properly here, which made the differences much easier to see. The honest answer is that whether messaging is capped separates the usable options from the rest. The effect showed up without exception regardless of which city I set.
I came at this after wasting time on the wrong options before deciding, and it was more revealing than I expected. In practice photo quality on both sides explains why old recommendations age badly. The pattern repeated consistently enough to trust across every option I tried.
Things I wish I had checked sooner:
Whether the app requires a social login — worth two minutes before you commit.
Find out how the app handles people who never reply — I would treat this as a dealbreaker.
Whether there is any verification step at all
Whether you can filter out inactive accounts — it matters more after the first month.
I resisted the urge to switch too early with a bit of patience, which took the guesswork out of it. Realistically how granular the filters are becomes obvious only after a month. The effect stayed consistently enough to trust across the whole period I tracked. That is the short version ultimately, if your experience points elsewhere.

I ran two at a time for four weeks each while comparing them, and it reframed what I thought mattered. Cutting through it, the amount of information visible before matching turns out to matter far more than the interface. It played out the same way in a way I could measure regardless of which city I set. I would check it before committing really, so treat this as a starting point.
Other names that came up: luvdate.site, datelink.online, datingfly.online.

I trialled the free tiers only with a couple of accounts, which made the differences much easier to see. Whichever option you pick, how the free tier is gated explains most of the complaints here. The evidence pointed the same way fairly clearly even when I varied the time of day. Your mileage may differ honestly, it takes very little effort to check.
Not a recommendation as such, but Souldate is the other name that keeps surfacing.

I have been through this properly over a few months, and it was worth the effort. Whichever option you pick, whether verification exists at all quietly determines how long you stay.
To Ryan's point, the part people miss is that the app matters least once your profile is genuinely finished.

My experience runs the other way. the emphasis on filters overlooks how few people fill in the fields they filter on. That is my read, anyway.
