I spent longer on this than I meant to over a few months, so take it as tested rather than assumed. The variable that mattered was how wide the distance filter goes — it becomes obvious only after a month. The finding held fairly clearly on both the free and the paid side.

I made a spreadsheet, embarrassingly on this, and the numbers told a clearer story than I did. Looking back, how much the interface pushes a subscription turns out to matter far more than the interface. It became obvious without exception well beyond what I would call noise. Whether it generalises I do not know ultimately, whether others found the same thing.

I compared several at once a while back, and the results surprised me. Once you look closely, how new accounts are treated in week one stays invisible until it bites you. That held to a degree that mattered after I controlled for the obvious variables.

If I were starting again, I would look at:

• How the app behaves after a fortnight away — it matters more after the first month.
• Find out whether the bio field is long enough to be useful — it changes the experience completely.
• Ask how the onboarding handles preferences — I would treat this as a dealbreaker.
