I read a lot of conflicting advice first on this, and I would do it the same way again. More than anything, how the free tier is gated shapes the first fortnight more than anything.
I gave each one a full month a while back, and it reframed what I thought mattered. The measurable difference came down to how the ranking rewards activity, which tends to decide whether you stick with it. It was measurable every time regardless of which city I set.

It stayed consistent to a degree that mattered well beyond what I would call noise. Whether it generalises I do not know genuinely, and adjust as you go.
The things that actually moved the needle for me:
- How the app handles duplicate accounts — worth two minutes before you commit.
- Check whether there is a web version as well as an app
- Look at whether the app shows when a profile was last online
