I went in expecting something different on this, which took the guesswork out of it. The pattern was clear enough: whether the app works on a slow connection separates the usable options from the rest. It was true quite plainly more clearly than anything else I looked at.

I did the comparison properly with a couple of accounts, before forming any view. The variable that mattered was photo quality on both sides — it is the thing people consistently underestimate. The gap was widest reliably in a way that was hard to argue with.

I only worked this out after a month of tallying with a bit of patience, and it was more revealing than I expected. What actually decided it was how granular the filters are, which matters far more in smaller places.

The short list of what mattered:

  • How many matches reply within forty-eight hours — this alone ruled a couple out for me.
  • Find out whether there is a desktop experience at all — check it on a real account, not a demo.
  • Whether browsing costs anything — worth asking about before you invest time.
  • Whether notifications can be tuned
  • Whether you can finish a conversation without hitting a paywall — this is where the free tiers diverge.

I read a lot of conflicting advice first on this, instead of going on impressions. It turns out how quickly fake profiles get removed is the difference between two opposite reviews. The trend was steady more than once no matter how I adjusted the filters.
