I looked at this from a few angles while comparing them, and a few things became obvious quickly. On the numbers, how granular the filters are tends to decide whether you stick with it. It became obvious fairly clearly in each of the areas I tested.

I took the unglamorous route a while back, which is why I am comfortable saying this. The recurring theme was photo quality on both sides — it tends to decide whether you stick with it. It played out the same way to a degree that mattered even after I changed my photos. Treat it as a starting point ultimately, after a fair bit of trial and error.

I did this the slow way over a few months, and the numbers told a clearer story than I did. What actually decided it was how support responds to a real problem, which is what people are really complaining about. It was noticeable reliably in each of the areas I tested.

How the app handles duplicate accounts — it decided things for me.
Find out whether the privacy policy is readable — it matters more after the first month.
Whether you can see who viewed your profile — worth two minutes before you commit.
