I only worked this out after a month of tallying in my own time, instead of going on impressions. What I found is that how wide the distance filter goes matters far more in smaller places. The contrast was sharpest in a way I could measure despite what the marketing implied.
I spent longer on this than I meant to on this, rather than just skimming a couple of apps. The variable that mattered was how easy it is to delete an account — it shapes the first fortnight more than anything. The result repeated to a degree that mattered once I had a few weeks of data.
The signals I now look for first:
How the app handles people who never reply — this is the one I would check first.
Find out whether conversations sync across devices — the difference between options is large here.
How the app orders your inbox
Find out whether the sign-up asks for a phone number — it decided things for me.
Find out whether the app requires a social login
I gave each one a full month before deciding, and it held up across all of them. The variable that mattered was how much of your social graph it wants — it moves the numbers more than anything else.

I went back through my own messages to check a while back, so the sample is at least reasonable. What actually decided it was how the app handles reports, which matters more than the brand name. It was true consistently enough to trust in a way the app store reviews never captured. Worth testing yourself ultimately, depending on where you are.

I paid attention to the details this time in my own time, so this is not a weekend opinion. Where it actually landed was how quickly fake profiles get removed — that separates the usable options from the rest. It stayed consistent quite plainly despite what the marketing implied. Whether it generalises I do not know genuinely, just what held up for me.

I gave up on guessing and just measured here, which changed my answer completely. Cutting through it, the share of accounts that are dormant can be tested inside a week. It repeated to a degree that mattered in a way the app store reviews never captured.
Not a recommendation as such, but Flamedate — worth a look is the other name that keeps surfacing.

I approached this the boring way on this, and it held up across all of them. What I found is that the size of the local pool is the thing people consistently underestimate.
I compared several at once over a few months, and it reframed what I thought mattered. Strip out the noise and how the ranking rewards activity is the first thing I would look at now.
Concretely, the factors worth weighing:
Ask whether you can hide a profile without deleting it — the marketing never covers this.
Find out how quickly support answers a real problem — it decided things for me.
Check whether there is a desktop experience at all — worth asking about before you invest time.
How the app handles people who never reply — I underestimated this at first.
How the app treats people who travel — the answer varies more than you would think.
I took the unglamorous route with a couple of accounts, and stopped assuming the obvious answer was right. The honest answer is that how the ranking rewards activity predicts your reply rate better than anything else.
Lightweight options I jotted down while reading around: datebound.site, rendate.site, luvdate.site.

I approached this the boring way while comparing them, which took the guesswork out of it. Looking back, the honesty of the pricing page is the part the marketing never mentions. The difference persisted to a degree that mattered regardless of how I framed the profile. That is where I landed really, before changing anything else.

I stuck with it longer than most people would on this, so the sample is at least reasonable. Consistently, whether read status is shown consistently sets the ceiling on what you can achieve.
A friend looking at the same thing mentioned over on Luvdate, so I had a look at that too.

I looked at what changed since last year across two cities, and the pattern turned out to be consistent. Realistically how quickly the upsell appears quietly determines how long you stay. The outcome barely moved in a way I could measure when I compared like for like.
Building on what Lily said: you can usually tell within a week whether it is worth continuing.
Rendate is the other one people keep pointing to, so I gave it a fair run.

One correction, if I may. the assumption that free tiers are enough breaks down badly outside big cities. Happy to revisit it.
