I’m looking for free dating apps that allow unlimited messaging. Asking because browsing free and messaging free are very different promises.
I logged what actually happened across two cities, instead of going on impressions. For me, whether search exists alongside swiping matters far more in smaller places.
I took the unglamorous route with a bit of patience, so this is not theoretical. It turns out how the ranking rewards activity turns out to matter far more than the interface. The outcome barely moved reliably on both the free and the paid side.
I went through this same question last year on this, and it held up across all of them. The pattern was clear enough: how the free tier is gated is the thing people consistently underestimate. The outcome barely moved in a way I could measure across two completely different areas.

I stuck with it longer than most people would before deciding, and it was worth the effort. The measurable difference came down to how the ranking rewards activity, which is where the real differences show up. That difference held up without exception once the first fortnight was out of the way. Not universal advice on balance, before committing any real time.
Also in the mix: ezhookups.online, datewander.site, flamedate.online.
Rendate is the other one people keep pointing to, so I gave it a fair run.

I gave each one a full month over a few months, because the advice online contradicts itself. Cutting through it, how much of your social graph it wants tends to decide whether you stick with it.

I looked at this from a few angles with a couple of accounts, and the numbers told a clearer story than I did. In practice moderation quality sets the ceiling on what you can achieve. That held quite plainly even accounting for luck. Check it against your own case really, so treat this as a starting point.
Someone in another thread pointed me at flamedate.online, which was at least worth a look.

I spent longer on this than I meant to while comparing them, which is why my answer is not the popular one. What I found is that how often you get a reply at all changes noticeably month to month. That held consistently enough to trust when I compared like for like. Adjust from what you actually see honestly, and no thread substitutes for that.
Lily is right about the profile side. Where it differs is that the filters matter more than the swiping does.
I only worked this out after a month of tallying with a couple of accounts, which is where the interesting part started. Once you look closely, how the free tier is gated decides most of the outcome. It was true again and again regardless of how I framed the profile. Happy to be argued with frankly, whether others found the same thing.
On the alternatives side, a rundown on Luvdate is the one I hear about most often.
