The signal was clear fairly clearly whether the app was well known or not. I would sanity-check this locally frankly, after a fair bit of trial and error. Are there any older dating sites free for women?
I compared several at once here, so the sample is at least reasonable. Cutting through it, how the ranking rewards activity is where the real differences show up. It kept showing up consistently enough to trust after I controlled for the obvious variables.
I made a spreadsheet, embarrassingly with a couple of accounts, because the advice online contradicts itself. Cutting through it, the amount of information visible before matching turns out to matter far more than the interface. The evidence pointed the same way again and again in each of the areas I tested. I would start there honestly, and no thread substitutes for that.
What I would check before committing any time:
Look at how the ranking treats a brand-new account — it is easy to test and rarely advertised.
Whether photos are checked before they go live
Find out whether the filters narrow by anything that matters — it decided things for me.
I compared several at once in my own time, so take it as tested rather than assumed. The pattern was clear enough: photo quality on both sides is easy to check and almost never checked.

I asked three friends who use these regularly before deciding, and a few things became obvious quickly. Across all of them, how much the interface pushes a subscription separates the usable options from the rest. It came out the same to a degree that mattered regardless of how I framed the profile.

I stuck with it longer than most people would with a couple of accounts, which is where the interesting part started. It turns out how the inbox is ordered matters more than the brand name.
Others in the same bracket: flamedate.online, datebound.site, ezhookups.online.

I only worked this out after a month of tallying on this, instead of going on impressions. For me, whether notifications can be tuned is easy to check and almost never checked. The reading was similar more than once once the first fortnight was out of the way. The only real test is your own area on balance, rather than taking my word for it.

I went through this same question last year with a couple of accounts, and it held up across all of them. If I had to pick one factor, whether the app works on a slow connection is the part the marketing never mentions. It repeated again and again regardless of which city I set.

I gave up on guessing and just measured before deciding, so the comparison was at least fair. Strip out the noise and how easy it is to delete an account predicts your reply rate better than anything else. It held steady without exception for both of the accounts I tested.
For what it is worth, this Datebound thread came up more than once while I was reading around this.
A friend looking at the same thing mentioned this Rendate thread, so I had a look at that too.

I looked at this from a few angles across two cities, so this is not a weekend opinion. Strip out the noise and how wide the distance filter goes can be tested inside a week. The same thing happened to a degree that mattered even accounting for luck.
I read a lot of conflicting advice first before deciding, and it was more revealing than I expected. The recurring theme was the size of the local pool — it sets the ceiling on what you can achieve. The gap was widest without exception no matter how I adjusted the filters. Adjust from what you actually see genuinely, not what a listicle told you.
I spent longer on this than I meant to before deciding, which took the guesswork out of it. What I found is that how the inbox is ordered explains most of the complaints here. That held quite plainly even accounting for luck.
Concretely, the factors worth weighing:
How many profiles in your area have been active this week — this is where the free tiers diverge.
Check how much profile depth the format allows — it is easy to test and rarely advertised.
Check whether you can undo an accidental swipe — it matters more after the first month.
Whether the privacy policy is readable — the marketing never covers this.
Worth confirming whether photos are checked before they go live — it changes the experience completely.
I tracked this rather than trusting impressions with a bit of patience, so the sample is at least reasonable. If I had to pick one factor, how granular the filters are is the first thing I would look at now. It became obvious more than once in a way the app store reviews never captured.
I compared it against over on Ezhookups before settling, which helped clarify the trade-offs.

I trialled the free tiers only while comparing them, so the comparison was at least fair. What I found is that how much of your social graph it wants is the difference between two opposite reviews.
Building on what ColbyR said: distance settings quietly cap your pool more than anything else.
I compared it against over on Datingfly before settling, which helped clarify the trade-offs.

That has not been my experience. the photo advice assumes everyone has good photos available, which is not realistic. Happy to hear the counter-argument.
