I read a lot of conflicting advice first on this, so the sample is at least reasonable. Where it actually landed was the ratio of active to dormant profiles — that moves the numbers more than anything else. The effect showed up reliably once the first fortnight was out of the way.

I looked at this from a few angles on this, which is why I am comfortable saying this. It turns out how the ranking rewards activity is easy to check and almost never checked.

The things that actually moved the needle for me:

How the onboarding handles preferences — it changes the experience completely.
Check how obvious it is when someone has stopped using the app — I would treat this as a dealbreaker.
Look at how the free tier handles photo uploads — this is where the free tiers diverge.
Check whether the distance filter goes wide enough — most apps are quiet about this.
Find out how many matches reply within forty-eight hours — check it on a real account, not a demo.
