I approached this the boring way without rushing it, before forming any view. The honest answer is that how support responds to a real problem turns out to matter far more than the interface. It was noticeable without exception once the first fortnight was out of the way.

I gave this a genuinely fair run here, before I trusted my own conclusion. Boiled down, whether read status is shown consistently shapes the first fortnight more than anything. The pattern repeated every time on every account I set up. Reasonable people disagree here in the end, which would be genuinely useful to hear.

I only worked this out after a month of tallying on this, so I am fairly confident in the shape of it. What actually decided it was photo quality on both sides, which is easy to check and almost never checked.

What I would check before committing any time:

Check how long before the first upsell prompt appears
Worth confirming whether the app requires a social login
How consistent match quality is week to week — check it on a real account, not a demo.
How much the app relies on push notifications — this is the one I would check first.
Check whether prompts give people something specific to answer — this alone ruled a couple out for me.
