I went in expecting something different with a bit of patience, and the numbers told a clearer story than I did. On the numbers, the quality of the profile prompts explains most of the complaints here.
I logged what actually happened a while back, and it was worth the effort. On the numbers, photo quality on both sides separates the usable options from the rest. It stood out again and again when I compared like for like. I would not overthink it ultimately, and adjust as you go.
I did this the slow way with a couple of accounts, which is why my answer is not the popular one. The recurring theme was how consistent match quality is week to week — it drives the outcome more than luck does.
The handful of things that made a real difference:
- How many photos the format actually allows — most apps are quiet about this.
- Check whether there is any verification step at all — it is easy to test and rarely advertised.
- How much the app relies on push notifications — check it on a real account, not a demo.
- Whether there is a web version as well as an app
- Find out whether browsing costs anything — this is the one I would check first.
