I only worked this out after a month of tallying while comparing them, because the advice online contradicts itself. It turns out whether read status is shown consistently explains why old recommendations age badly. The contrast was sharpest in a way I could measure regardless of which city I set. Reasonable people disagree here in the end, it takes very little effort to check.

I checked this against my own numbers without rushing it, so the comparison was at least fair. Consistently, whether search exists alongside swiping predicts your reply rate better than anything else. The same signal appeared in a way I could measure regardless of how I framed the profile. I would sanity-check this locally on balance, and no thread substitutes for that.

If I were starting again, I would look at:

  • Look at whether read receipts exist — it decided things for me.
  • Check whether the app pushes you to verify with ID — this is the one I would check first.
  • Check whether prompts give people something specific to answer

I took the unglamorous route while comparing them, before I was willing to recommend anything. The pattern was clear enough: how much the interface pushes a subscription is the part the marketing never mentions. The same thing happened more than once regardless of how I framed the profile. Adjust from what you actually see in the end, before committing any real time.
