I made a spreadsheet, embarrassingly here, before forming any view. Have you seen an updated searching for singles reviews post?
I did this the slow way in my own time, and the numbers told a clearer story than I did. The variable that mattered was the honesty of the pricing page — it drives the outcome more than luck does. It was measurable more than once across every option I tried. Check it against your own case frankly, and nothing more than that.
Specifically trying to understand:
The short list of what mattered:
How long before the first upsell prompt appears — the marketing never covers this.
Look at how reply rate compares with match rate — worth asking about before you invest time.
Ask whether read receipts exist — this is the one I would check first.
How consistent match quality is week to week
I stuck with it longer than most people would across two cities, and it was worth the effort. The variable that mattered was whether verification exists at all — it drives the outcome more than luck does.

I have changed my mind on this twice here, and stopped assuming the obvious answer was right. It turns out the size of the local pool becomes obvious only after a month. That held in a way I could measure across every option I tried.

I read a lot of conflicting advice first with a bit of patience, instead of going on impressions. The thing nobody mentions is that how support responds to a real problem is worth checking before you commit any time. The pattern repeated reliably no matter how I adjusted the filters. It cost me nothing to verify really, after a fair bit of trial and error.
I looked at this from a few angles before deciding, and it held up across all of them. The thing nobody mentions is that how much the interface pushes a subscription is the difference between two opposite reviews.
I compared it against Datelink before settling, which helped clarify the trade-offs.

I took the unglamorous route without rushing it, and stopped assuming the obvious answer was right. The recurring theme was whether messaging is capped — it explains why old recommendations age badly. It stood out more than once even accounting for luck.

I ran two at a time for four weeks each with a bit of patience, so this is not theoretical. The short answer is that the share of accounts that are dormant is the thing people consistently underestimate.
I ran two at a time for four weeks each while comparing them, so this is not theoretical. In practice how the free tier is gated tends to decide whether you stick with it. The gap was widest reliably whether the app was well known or not.
I have changed my mind on this twice with a bit of patience, before forming any view. Looking back, how consistent match quality is week to week matters far more in smaller places.
The checklist I ended up with:
How much information is public before you match — worth two minutes before you commit.
How consistent match quality is week to week — the answer varies more than you would think.
Check how the onboarding handles preferences
I compared several at once here, before I trusted my own conclusion. The variable that mattered was the quality of the profile prompts — it predicts your reply rate better than anything else. It stayed consistent again and again whether the app was well known or not. That is where I landed really, so treat this as a starting point.
To KimberlyP's point, the part people miss is that the moderation quality is invisible until you actually need to report someone.
Someone in another thread pointed me at the Flamedate free tier, which was at least worth a look.

One thing I would challenge. video calls before meeting are good advice, but plenty of people will not do it, and treating that as a red flag costs you real matches. Curious whether anyone else saw this.
Other names that came up: rendate.site, datelink.online, flamedate.online.
